PROGRAMME OF ACTIVITIES:

OUTREACH TO SCHOOLS/COMMUNITIES:

The goal of this proposed activity would be to provide pupils and students in universities, tertiary institutions and school with information and introduce them to the Earth Charter Program in the country. Through this program it is expected that the cost for workshop and other sensitisation program will be minimised. The management of the secretariat will collaborate with principles of secondary schools, student union and a host of others, with the aim of creating access to make the outreach possible.

The outreach program itself will entail talk about the Earth Charter and its work in Sierra Leone, questions from the targeted group.

YOUTH LEADERSHIP TRAINING:

In as much as we intend to make the Earth Charter Youth Group in Sierra Leone efficient, effective and productive, Youth Leadership Training Program will have to be a priority program. The training program will focus on capacity building and equip young people with knowledge and skills that will enable them to explain the Earth Charter and develop down to earth and sustainable development projects that will positively impact their communities. The Earth Charter Youth Group, Sierra Leone (ECYG-SL) Secretariat will ensure that young people themselves are placed at the centre of the activities.

THE ENVIRONMENT:

The Earth Charter Youth Group Sierra Leone Environmental Program will be directly extracted from the Earth Charter Principles. Specifically, young people and the wider community will be given the opportunity to read the principles of the Earth Charter in relation to Respect for Earth and Life and furthermore, efforts will be made to translate this document into local dialects for people in local communities. It will create awareness for young people as to how they can take care of their environment and help promote a healthy living. Environmental projects will also be undertaken.

MEDIA PROGRAMS:

The Earth Charter Youth Group, Sierra Leone seeks to establish collaboration with the media, both print and electronic. Through this it is expected that a wider audiences will be targeted. The ECYG-SL will also ensure that it designs projects that will be forwarded to donors for the training of young people in the media. The purpose of this is to enable the media to report fairly about the activities of the ECYG-SL in the country at both national and international levels.

AWARDS:

ECYG-SL will have to design a special project that will geared towards giving yearly small grants (if funds are available) awards to youth organizations and individuals that are working to promote the principles of the Earth Charter through concrete projects. The objective of the award is to recognize the role of young people/institution in helping to make their communities/regions understands the principles of the Earth Charter Initiative at national level.

NETWORKING:

The principles of the Earth Charter Initiative focus on a range of issues that will help to protect and safeguard the environment and human dignity. ECYG-SL is already aware of the fact that several organizations are also working on programs that are geared towards the same direction.

In as much as members of the ECYG-SL are conscious of the mammoth task and challenge that is ahead, we are doing our best in networking with other local, and international organizations, the Government and other global bodies with similar programs through an integrated effort and a comprehensive approach. It is believed that through networking and collaborative efforts, the ECYG-SL and collaborating partners/institutions will be able to share information and resources, avoid duplication and explore existing collaborative opportunities that will increase the impact and effectiveness of the work of ECYG-SL. As development continues to unfold, so the ECYG-SL prepares to develop it to match with current issues.
